The PAESMEM award is a major milestone in my goal to impact lives. This impact is achieved by mentoring and scientific discoveries, which for me are deeply interconnected and each pursuit stimulates the other. My mentoring has introduced and retained individuals from underserved minorities in science by honest guidance and career advice. In science, my FDA-approved invention for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration has had a substantial impact, benefiting millions of patients.

Tayyaba Hasan has been a faculty member at Harvard Medical School (HMS) since 1987. Trained as a STEM scientist, she is based at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). In collaboration with colleagues at MGH, she took on the challenge of developing careers for all basic and STEM scientists in a non-STEM environment. To drive change and create new infrastructure, she engaged in dialogue with the research community and visionary institutional leaders. This collaboration led to the establishment of The Office for Research Career Development (ORCD, now ORC), with Tayyaba becoming its Founding Director. ORCD, the first of its kind in MGH's 209-year history, was dedicated to the career development of basic and STEM scientists. The sustainability of this initiative is demonstrated by the addition of a graduate student office and a postdoctoral office to support the ORC since Tayyaba stepped down from her role. She also chaired the HMS-wide Joint Committee on the Status of Women, where she opened a leadership award for advancement of women to men as well, making it a mainstream recognition. She helped establish an institution-wide maternity leave policy and co-authored a paper on "Gender Equity in Funding".
Tayyaba has received five mentoring awards and is sought for guidance by STEM scientists at all levels (high school to faculty) wishing to contribute to medicine yet retain a STEM focus. She continues to collaborate with former trainees who have successful careers in STEM fields, are excellent mentors themselves, and an inspiration to her.
Tayyaba has a B.Sc. from the University of Punjab, an M.Sc. in organic chemistry from the University of Karachi, an M.Phil. in theoretical chemistry from the University of Islamabad, and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Arkansas.
